Peter Lorimer, born in Dundee, Scotland, in
1946 signed professional for Leeds United as a 15-year old in 1962 and made
his first team debut in the Second Division against Southampton later that
year, still aged 15. Looking back in 1970 he maintained that his
most memorable match was this, his debut. In 1963 he won Scottish amateur caps on a tour of Kenya. In a 1970 interview with Shoot magazine Lorimer nominated his best country visited as Kenya! In 1963/64 Leeds won promotion to the First Division under Don Revie, though Lorimer did not play in the first team that season. He played again in the 1964/65 season when Leeds finished 2nd in the First Division, an achievement they repeated in 1965/66. In a phenomenal run from 1964/65 to 1973/74 Leeds did not finish outside of the top four at any time in the ten year period, winning the First Division championship twice, and the F.A. Cup once (plus three Cup Final defeats). The FKS 1968/69 sticker album notes: "Was the youngest player ever in Leeds United team when he made his debut in September 1962 at 15 years, nine months. Scottish schoolboy and youth international he possesses a lethal shot". The FKS 1969/70 sticker album notes: "Recovered from a broken leg early in his career. Deadly accurate striker...". In the 'Focus on' segment in Shoot magazine, 3rd October 1970, Lorimer made the following insightful comments:
The FKS 1971/72 sticker album notes: "Scottish striker from the right wing who hit 176 goals as a schoolboy and has scored over 100 as a senior". The 1971/72 A&BC Chewing Gum purple back card notes: "The possessor of one of the hardest shots in league football, Lorimer scored his hundredth goal for Leeds last season, when he also gained recognition by Scotland. Fast and direct, he developed through Leeds' junior sides, and is now rated as one of their most dangerous forwards". The 1972/73 Barratt card adds "Peter had one of the hardest shots in football and scores 'impossible' goals". In 1974 Lorimer was part of the Scottish side which travelled to Germany for the World Cup tournament. Scotland remained undefeated in their Group, Lorimer scoring in a 2-0 victory over Zaire, but they were eliminated on goal difference. The mid to late 70s saw Don Revie leave Leeds United and the super squad break up. The club's slide continued, with Leeds relegated at the end of the 1981/82 season, though Lorimer had left the club by then to play for York City. He also travelled to the U.S. where he played a couple of seasons. In 1983 Lorimer returned to play for Leeds United in the Second Division, playing for three more seasons and scoring lots of goals. At the end of his playing career he had made over 500 League appearances. Still associated with the club, he has now been a great servant for Leeds United for almost 50 years. A true legend of the game. |
