FKS World Cup Soccer Stars - Mexico 70

England Belgium Brazil Bulgaria Czech'a El Salv'r Israel Italy Mexico Morocco Peru Rumania Russia Sweden Uruguay W. Ger.

England

England qualified for the tournament as holders from 1966. They were grouped with Brazil, Czechoslovakia and Romania in Group C. England played solid football to qualify with 1-0 wins over the Czechs and Romanians, and a 0-1 loss to Brazil (a match made more memorable for 'that save' by Gordon Banks from Pele).

England were knocked out by West Germany in the quarter-final. After leading 2-0 England faltered, losing 2-3 after extra time.

Hurst, Peters, Clarke and Mullery scored England's four goals for the tournament. Sir Alf stayed on as England manager until May 1974. England didn't qualify for the 1974 World Cup Finals, so this tournament signalled the end of a number of World Cup careers.
